Media personality Khanyi Mbau has found herself in hot water after expressing her views on gender-based violence (GBV) during a recent interview on Mzansi Highlights.

In the interview, the former Abo Mama actress opened up about her past abusive relationship and offered her insights into why she believes some men are abusive.

Mbau revealed that she herself had been a victim of abuse and had to undergo a process of introspection to understand the reasons behind her mistreatment. She explained that some men become abusive due to societal pressures and because the women in their lives do not assert their own worth.

“During the era of the Queen of Bling culture, I used material possessions to cover up my emotional wounds. I thought that the glitz and glamour were a substitute for true happiness.

“But in reality, I was chasing after things that caused me more pain and loss. I lost my dignity and my voice because when you are with a man who controls you, you become nothing more than a decorative object.

“I had to embark on a journey of self-discovery to overcome my depression and understand that the pressure we put on men contributes to the prevalence of abuse,” Mbau said.

While some individuals expressed their understanding of Mbau’s perspective, many others criticized her, labeling her a “GBV apologist.” The reactions on social media were mixed, with a significant number of people condemning her views.
