The health center in Western Cape has been attacked and robbed by bandits, impersonating to be patients seeking healthcare.
According to the department’s Spokesperson, Monique Johnstone, the accident occurred on Tuesday morning at the Gugulethu Community Health Center.
She recounted the experience saying, “Two people, one in a wheelchair and the other pushing him gained access, seeking healthcare. As security guards let them in at the gate, the suspects held them at gunpoint and two more suspects came in. The four suspects robbed the security guards and left.” She said,
‘Soon afterward they left and thankfully did not reach the trauma unit where the staff and patients were. No one was hurt physically,” she added.
“However, the trauma such actions leave on the victims is long-lasting. Everyone at the facility has been offered counselling and will be supported in their emotional recovery” Johnstone said.
She strongly condemned the act committed by the bandits saying, no society should have to experience it. “We condemn any form of crime, even more so when criminals prowl on sick and frail.
“A health facility is a place of healing where those in need of medical care go. This should not, in any society, be seen as an easy target for criminals”
She further added “This attack was clearly a pre-planned on vulnerable parts of the community. They are a danger to society and should be prosecuted by the justice system”
The department said it has handed the footage of the act to the police for further investigation and arrest of the suspects.
The Health Department urged communities to raise the alarm if they become aware of the threats to their health services.
