In a candid and courageous Instagram story, popular sangoma, DJ, and reality TV star Gogo Skhotheni recently opened up about surviving domestic violence. Her story sheds light on the dark reality faced by many victims of abuse.
Gogo Skhotheni, whose real name is Tumi Motsoeneng, revealed that she has been physically abused.
Bruises mar her face, but she has chosen not to share images, especially to shield her children from the painful truth. “Abuse is a drug you end up normalizing,” she said, “but thank God I am alive.”

The sangoma shared screenshots of her conversation with the abuser, whom she did not name.
In the public eye, speaking out about such matters requires careful consideration. Gogo Skhotheni expressed her hurt and vulnerability, knowing that other women have faced similar struggles.
Gogo Skhotheni is married to Monde Shange. Their relationship has weathered storms, including a six-month separation.
However, the couple has worked on their differences and reunited. Their 2-year-old son, who has been hospitalized for years, remains at the centre of their shared journey.
Interestingly, Gogo Skhotheni revealed in 2022 that she had taken a second husband, Sibusiso, as instructed by her ancestors.
While she liked the idea of having more than one partner, Shange disapproved. “It was fun seeing him get angry,” she said, “because I hardly do anything to my husband.”
Although Gogo Skhotheni has not yet revealed her abuser’s identity, she has taken legal action. Her bravery in sharing her story encourages others to break the silence and seek healing.
