Slikour has shown that in the ever-changing music industry scenario, both emerging and established musicians face numerous challenges, particularly when it comes to promoting and distributing their work.

Access to resources and platforms is frequently a barrier to their growth, depriving the world of varied musical talents. Slikour, a South African hip-hop veteran and businessman, decided to create a music distribution network solely for local artists.

The veteran rapper spoke with SA Hip-hop Mag via The Episode Podcast about what inspired him to start Distro, a music distribution platform that empowers local artists.

“Firstly, Distro was sitting as an idea pre-COVID, not the name. The idea to distribute the music was sitting, I was speaking with different people but no one was getting it,” he said.

“The concept has always been there,” Siya said, “it was just a matter of timing and having the right kind of people around to buy into the notion.”

“The vision has always been there, it’s just about the timing, the right people. So because we have uploading music for downloads on our platform, we’re like, why dont we just distribute,” he added.

Slikour, as a businessman stated that the music distribution market is profitable and that it requires someone who cares to plan out how musicians may benefit from the platform that he is developing.

He went on to say that “The gap with distribution is that distribution anyone can do it, it’s just that there are no real black companies that do it.

“Now I understood why I did it in a year and why there are no real black companies that do it. It’s because it creates a lot of liquid cash, that people dont claim.”

“You make like maybe 20 times the amount in a weekend or 30 times the amount in a weekend. But it doesn’t mean that money is useless. How do I make the money useful for the artist? You have to care to think that way,” Slikour added.

As Slikour’s platform grows and evolves, it serves as a monument to the power of individual initiative in positively impacting the lives of many artists and music fans.
