As South Africa commemorates Women’s Day, honoring the historic 1956 women’s march, Mabotja shares her perspective on what it truly means to embody “imbokodo” in 2023.
The phrase “Wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo” (you strike a woman, you strike a rock) has evolved over time, symbolizing different concepts for each individual.
“While I appreciate being recognized as a strong woman capable of achieving multiple roles, I also acknowledge my humanity. I believe that strength doesn’t necessitate enduring unnecessary hardships to gain respect or validation.”
Mabotja advocates for collaborative efforts and sharing information as a means to uplift women collectively. “Collaboration is a powerful tool for growth. It’s about creating opportunities, building up, and helping all involved to prosper.”
Mabotja’s career trajectory underscores the value of multifaceted involvement and collaboration. Through projects like ‘Unpacked,’ she harnessed relationships to create opportunities, demonstrating the effectiveness of collective efforts.
