The 2023 edition of Makhanda National Art Festival officially kicked off on the 22nd June, with a line of activities and presentations from artistic performances for the next 10 days in Cape Town.
Makhanda National Art Festival provides a platform for many to revisit and refine their creations, reconnect with peers and celebrate milestones, with renowned South African choreographers like Gregory Maqoma and Mamela Nyamza.

The 49th edition will also feature triple bill from Jazzart, as well as award-winning shows like Hold Still by scriptwriter Nadia Davids and the premiere of Droomwerk by Pieter Odendaal.
It will see that the Boston Youth Orchestra come in from USA to perform both the symphony concert and the Children’s Concert at the Festival. Another international artist to look out for is Sonja Hughes with her piece I am from Reykjavik; part protest, part sculpture and part ceremony.
The CEO of Makhanda National Arts Festival, Monica Newton said she looks forward to the return of visitors to support the local creative community, despite the current economic challenges.

We’re optimistic that visitors are starting to return but we’re also realistic about the realities of current economic pressures on disposable income. We’ve responded by creating a Festival to fit the times,” she said.
Newton assured guests and attendees that appropriate measures have been taken to mitigate the impact of load-shedding, despite the national energy crisis.
