In an era where the identity scam has become the latest hotspot, South Africa’s Home Affairs department, under the guidance of Minister Leon Schreiber, is playing no games.
With a nod to transparency—and probably a side-eye to the infamous case involving former Miss SA finalist Chidinma Adetshina—the department is stepping up its game to quash identity fraud.
If you’re wondering why ID fraud has suddenly become the talk of the town, look no further than Chidinma Adetshina—a former Miss SA finalist with the limelight thrust upon her for all the wrong reasons.

Thanks to her mother’s past involvement in identity theft, the model had to bow out of the beauty pageant world. Ah, the things we do for family, right?
In a recent tweet that sent shockwaves through the Twitterverse, Minister Leon Schreiber assured concerned citizens that, “Home Affairs is taking decisive action against ID fraud by moving to cancel IDs that are duplicated, held by illegal immigrants, or where the holder is deceased.
At the same time, we have put in place a fair process to unblock IDs that have been incorrectly blocked for years.” Talk about cleaning house!
While the focus may be on unblocking mistakenly-blocked IDs and cancelling fraudulent ones, this move marks a significant stride towards secure and verified identification.
So, if you’ve lost hope about ever recovering your wrongly blocked ID, you might just have a reason to smile. With Leon Schreiber at the helm, South Africa is poised to see significant improvements in tackling ID fraud.
