South Africa’s Johannesburg was thrown by a magnitude of Earthquake in the early hours of Sunday morning, leaving many in fear.
Buildings were affected following a strike of 4.4 magnitude in the Province of Gauteng, Johannesburg which originated from Boksburg area.

Residents have taken to social media to share videos of their experiences. Although no record of casualty or signs of aftershocks at the time of reporting.
An eyewitness recounted that a sound struck shortly after going to bed. “While I was sleeping, I felt my bed was shaking. Just as I woke up, I heard sounds coming from the ceiling, as if things were falling. Rattling sounds” says an eyewitness.
“However, it only lasted a few seconds. It was such a weird feeling that I’ve never felt before. It was as if there was a train underneath my house and I immediately started to panic because I had no idea what was happening,” says an eyewitness.
She added that she was unable to go back to sleep before taking to social media to discover that she had just experienced an earthquake.
The last earthquake in Johannesburg was recorded in mid-year 2014 with a magnitude of 5.3 in Gold mining town.
The major earthquake to hit South Africa was in 1969 and to date remains the most destructive pandemic in South Africa. The earthquake occurred abruptly in Tulbagh, measuring 6.3 on the right scale, and is said to be stronger than that of the 1809 Cape Town earthquake which recorded many casualties.
Earthquakes occur as a result of vibrations caused by rocks breaking and shifting under stress. The aftermath includes ground shaking, landslides, rock falls, and loss of lives and properties.
Earthquakes occur in the world with certain countries being more susceptible to them than others.
