Walt Disney Africa has hinted that it will increase the prices of its Disney plus subscription video streaming services in South Africa.

The price hike is for new and existing customers on both the monthly and annual subscription plans.  Effective from July 19th, Customers will pay R139 instead of R119 on the monthly plan.

The prices increased by 14.4% while the discount on annual and monthly plan will increase from R238 to R278, however, savings remain the same on a percentage basis.

Walt Disney Africa says, the development is necessary as it will strengthen the company’s goal of providing better and quality entertainment contents.

“We believe that this new price better reflects the value of the distinctive and curated collections of entertainment content found on Disney+. We continually add to and adjust our content mixes to serve our existing audience and future subscribers” Walt Disney wrote.

Disney plus announced that all existing annual subscribers in South Africa who get their subscription directly from the Disney+ would receive an SMS from June 4th. While monthly subscribers from 13 June to advise them that the price for their subscription will take effect in the middle of July.

Existing customers who get their subscription via Google and Apple will be notified on 19 July. Apple customer’s price will take effect from 30 days after the notification while Google customers new prices will come into effect 60 days after notification.

Customers signed up through third parties such as Apple or Google in app purchase must refer to their relevant provider for more information, Walt Disney added.

The price hike is coming just after a year Disney+ launched in South Africa. Even with the new price hike, South Africans will still be paying over R60 less than US Disney+ subscribers.
