It would be wrong to leave Amapiano off of this list. Piano has transcended South African borders and dominated the world, inspiring non-South African artists to produce hits, despite expectations that the genre would only last a few years (if it were lucky) before fading into oblivion.
Hitmakers like Uncle Waffles, Major League DJz, Focalistic, Kabza De Small, DBN Gogo, Nkosazana Daughter, Pabi Cooper, and others have contributed to the genre’s advancement making it no1 1 on our top 4 south African music genre.
GOSPEL
We have always admired how Mzansi Gospel artists provide their listeners with wonderful music as a gift. This year, beautiful music has inspired people thanks to many Gospel hitmakers.
Even though there haven’t been many popular Gospel songs thus far in 2023, some of our favorites, such as Spirit Of Praise and others, have released some new songs.
Christopher Tin and the Soweto Gospel Choir collaborated on “The Drop That Contained the Sea: Waloyo Yamoni.” the list continues.
MASKANDI
You may be sure that the year has also been great for Maskandi music and its artists. You probably noticed that Maskandi musicians don’t put out singles if you’ve been paying attention.
They are more of an album crowd, and this year has been a bumper crop of records for them. Recent album releases include “I Uber” by Amabunjwa, “Isivulwe Yonke” by Ntancane, and others.
New music by Omacekeceke Abashaa, Ishayina, Ama Quality, and others has also entered the market.

AFRIKAANS
One of the most well-known subgenres of South African music is Afrikaans music. This is especially true given that the genre caters to many language users. Afrikaans music remains relevant every year, and this is no different in 2023.
The music has been insane lately, thanks to some huge stars on the scene. Good music has graced the airwaves thanks to artists like Kurt Darren, JAN JAN JAN, Wilma Van Heerden, Anzélle, and others.
