Grammy award-winning singer Tyla has recently come to the defence of Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina, a former Miss SA beauty pageant contestant. Chidimma found herself at the centre of a heated debate about her eligibility to represent South Africa.
Despite being born in South Africa, Chidimma faced criticism due to her father’s Nigerian heritage and her mother’s Mozambican background. The controversy spiralled out of control, leading Chidimma to withdraw from the contest.
The core of the debate focused on Chidimma’s South African identity and her suitability as an ambassador for the country. Critics questioned her loyalty and authenticity, digging into her family history.

To complicate matters, it was discovered that Chidimma’s mother possibly committed identity fraud in 2001 to obtain South African citizenship.
This revelation cast a shadow over Chidimma’s candidacy, leading her to pull out of the competition. However, not all is lost; she’s now been invited to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant.
Amidst all the turmoil, South African-born sensation Tyla took to social media to send well wishes to Chidimma. “Disappointed that this happened to her, but wish you all the best girl. Kill it!” she wrote on her timeline.
She emphasized her solidarity with Chidimma and criticized the bullying that the pageant contestant endured.
“I will always stand with South Africa, I just feel regardless of the opinions… she was bullied and that’s what I don’t stand for,” continued Tyla. It’s a strong message of support that reverberates through the South African community.
