Even superheroes need help sometimes. Babes Wodumo might have been acting strong in public but it has now touched her that her hubby and best friend is gone.

The steps back home after the death of a spouse can be the most hollow and lonely. It has left Bongekile Simelane, also known as Babes Wodumo, yearning for Mampintsha.

Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo, a Big Nuz member, died on December 24 after suffering a minor stroke.

Babes Wodumo was accompanied by her family to her marital home for lunch after burying her husband at Durban’s Lala Kahle Cemetery on December 30, 2022. After the funeral rites were completed, she faced the reality that the love of her life was no longer alive.

She’s now a 28-year-old single mother of a two-year-old boy named Sponge, who is comforted by the love her husband lavished on her while he was still alive.

“The sad thing is the bed is empty and she needs to take up more responsibilities. Babes is strong. What I like about her is that she didn’t change her character,” Babes’ sister Nondumiso Simelane said.

She claims that a bereaved Babes Wodumo finds herself calling out for her sweetheart. “She misses him a lot. She would call for him then realises he is gone.”

Nondumiso is confident that Babes will be able to pick up the pieces and provide for her son after her loss.

She recalls how the musician took on the role of raising her nephew while she was doing promotions before she became famous. “Raising Sponge is going to be easy for her. She raised my child. What would be difficult for her this time around?

“Babes will be fine. A lot of things in the house were Babes’ responsibility. She has been hands on. The only difference is that she has access to Mampintsha’s money, but Babes is still enjoying royalties from her Wololo hit song. I don’t see how she would go broke.”

Mampintsha’s family has criticized Babes’ way of mourning, including her disclosure that she had access to her partner’s phone.

Nondumiso expressed her dismay at Mampintsha’s family’s penchant for inciting drama rather than sympathizing with Babes.

“Emotionally, she is not okay. She needs to fix herself first. She needs to heal but that woman (Mampinstha’s sister) is not giving her time to heal and get a grip on reality and how to move forward.”

What a terrifying moment to experience, especially alone!
